def: dealing in or producing custom-made articles
As designers, we strive for the best possible solutions to the unique challenges we inevitably encounter during the course of a project. Many times, no immediately available solution is sufficient, and so we must find a way to forge a new path and create a new solution. These circumstances arise on every project and are unique to each project.
Therefore, at Morgan Madison we pride ourselves in (and prioritize for any hire), the ability to problem-solve, keeping limber and agile minds, and the ability to move quickly and effectively to navigate obstacles. This applies to both logistical and production challenges that arise during the course of a project, and to specific design-related quandaries, when no product on the market seems to fit the bill. It is when encountering the latter dilemma, that most Morgan Madison bespoke furniture and lighting designs are born.
These creations, or solutions, most often begin with a creative brainstorming conversation, then move into sketching. After we have arrived a place where we are excited about the direction and feel confident in the rationale, we reach out to one or many of our valued artisan partners who posses skills that are in alignment with the requirements of the project. Usually, after a series of in-depth conversations, testing, and sometimes even a prototype, we move forward with the production of the final product.
Why Bespoke?
At Morgan Madison, we often say, “just because it is beautiful doesn’t mean it shouldn’t function, and if it doesn’t function, it simply isn’t good design.” That being said, the opportunity to create something new isn’t just a about the thrill for us as designers. It is a way for us to connect with our client in a meaningful way – these custom elements often have a deeper symbolic meaning or purpose that goes beyond aesthetics. These elements are usually among our client’s most treasured pieces within the spaces we design for them.
